Rededication of the MSU Welcome Bridge
Commemorating The Life & Legacy of The Honorable Verda Freeman Welcome
Baltimore, Maryland, March 18, 2017 – Weyden W. Wedderburn ’94 and Annette C. Wedderburn, both lifetime members of Morgan State University Alumni Association gives back to Morgan State University by supporting the Rededication of MSU Welcome Bridge to commemorate the life and legacy of a true trailblazer and pioneer, the Honorable Verda Freeman Welcome.
Verda Freeman Welcome (March 18, 1907 – April 22, 1990) was a teacher, politician, and civil rights leader. In 1964, the Welcome Bridge at Morgan State University was erected and named in her honor. She was the first African-American female State Senator in the United States of America. In 1975, she was also responsible for introducing the bill to elevate Morgan State College to Morgan State University.
The Wedderburns made a significant contribution for the purchase of a bronze plaque of Verda Freeman Welcome that will be permanently installed at the end of Welcome Bridge near the Morgan Quad. The actual installation of the plaque near the Morgan Quad will be announced at a later date. We will keep you posted.
As you know, “we love Morgan to the moon and back”! This University poured so much into us and we believe it time for us to start doing our part! Let me know who wants to take this ride with us! We are looking for a few brave souls that understand the importance about giving back and paying it forward! It is not always about us but what we can do to make a difference in the life of others.
